Dr. Arthur Janov examines the power of beliefs and how they are used as a mechanism for dealing with early trauma that goes as far back as birth. Beliefs are a way to rationalize with pain rooted deep in the unconscious, and reveal that love is a biological need. Dr. Janov applies engrossing case studies and his many years of experience to bring the reader one step closer to understanding human behavior, and how pain can become converted into an idea. This is Dr. Janov's opus magnum, a revolutionary work in every sense of the word. It may help to change the practice of psychotherapy as we know it, and above it, how we give birth today; the shoulds and should nots. It explains in detail how early trauma and adversity can have lifelong consequences and result in serious afflictions from cancer to diabetes. It can have monumental implications for medical practice, as well, and points to how we can rear healthy children.

Primal Scream: The Musical

Arthur Janov has teamed up with legendary composer David Foster to present Primal Scream: The Musical, which has been adapted from Dr. Janov's best-selling book and is based on his experiences working in primal therapy with patients. After coming across several of Janov's poems 25 years ago, Foster put music to them and the rest is history.

The primal scream journey is a powerful and emotional musical comedy that centers around Jim and Julie, two lost souls who cannot love due to repressed childhood feelings as they delve into their troubled pasts to retrieve their lost and buried feelings that have led to a variety of neurotic behaviors. Featuring over thirty phenomenal song and dance numbers with Janov's lyrics and Foster's explosively entertaining music, viewers will enjoy a unique and exquisite musical experience layered with a deep understanding of the human psyche.

One raison d'etre for the play is to bring forth the message of Primal in an entertaining yet informative way. Actors will have Primals on stage expressed theatrically and not as strict therapy.  But the message will be that early childhood pain drives so much of our later behavior and symptoms; getting rid of the painful feelings resolves so much anxiety and depression.

Primal Scream: The Musical will run for one night on Friday, October 17th, 2014, 8pm, at Smothers Theater, Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA.

All proceeds from the play will go to The Primal Foundation for the continuation of brain research. More information can be found at and tickets can be purchased at
